If the child did have meningitis with his pneumonia, and it wasn't detected before treatment was instituted, then you probably would have sued your doctor for malpractice. The doctor was just looking out for the child's welfare. If you did not understand why they were doing it, you could have asked for an explanation. I perform spinal taps everyday in my 20 year-history of being a pediatrician and I have not seen the complications they were talking about.
